Packs 39, 573 and 109,

I really hate to send this email, but the Ice Fishing Derby is cancelled for this year. I have been in constant contact with Tightline Outdoors throughout the week keeping tabs on lake ice and road conditions as well as monitoring the weather forecast forSunday on the lake. The result is a situation we did not feel comfortable exposing the kids too.

· A warm early February did not let the ice get ‘extra’ thick.

· Wellington Lake officials say it has snowed several feet so far and was still snowing there today.

· All this recent weather has piled a lot of snow on the lake ice. This added a lot weight on top of the ice. Given this situation, we wouldn’t put the large warming huts up since it concentrates a lot of weight on a small section of ice.

· It will continue snowing Sunday forcing the kids to sit in the storm for 4 hours with no reprieve.

· Also, it is unlikely that the plows will come while we are there so it may get difficult to get out.

· This put us in a very questionable situation.

· Most importantly, we did not want to put the kids in a position of having a miserable time due to these conditions.

At least all is not completely lost. All the guides, club volunteers and lake management felt so bad about the weather sinking out trip promised to do an open water fishing excursion for us in late spring or summer. This would include a day of fishing with the area’s top guides and tournament fisherman, overnight camping with s’mores and more. I hope that makes this bitter pill easier to swallow.

I am very sorry for this inconvenience. I know many of you have had to do quite a bit of scrambling to make sure you could do this trip.

Yours in Scouting,

John Quarles
